The Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is looking for a Research Associate/PhD student (f/m/x) for 4 years (project end: 31.08.2027). The deadline for applications is 2 May 2023. The position begins 1 September 2023.

PhD student/Research associate position at Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The PhD project will complement the analysis of social differentiation in the ERC funded project “Late Ottoman Palestinians: Social and Cultural Dynamics in an Eastern Mediterranean Society during the Age of Empire, 1880-1920” (LOOP) with a study on landownership, property, and income in late Ottoman Palestine. The PhD candidate will be based in Bochum and work on the economic history of late Ottoman Palestine, supervised by Professor Johann Büssow. Ideally, the second supervisor will be an economic historian.

Your tasks:
- A survey and critique of the available primary sources and studies
- Exemplary case studies establishing profiles of ownership and applying general insights from research on Ottoman economic and legal history
- Preparation of data (entries in the project database)
- Participation in the regular project meetings
- Participation in the planning and implementation of two international workshops

Your profile:
- You have a master’s degree in History, Islamic Studies, or a related discipline
- You have good reading skills in Arabic and Turkish
- You have a background in economic history or social science research methods
- You are reliable, team-oriented and independent
- You are interested in learning new (digital) work techniques
